FLICKERFEST!

To really soak up summer in a unforgettable way, alongside picking up the newly reviewed Kings of Convenience album, Flickerfest, a national touring short film screening, is an event that is a must to be attended. Lucky Sydney-siders have the opportunity to check out the stop which is made at Bondi from the 8th-17th of January. Flickerfest shows not only Australian films, but international flicks also, with a total of 22 films screened. The theme that was put in place for film makers to integrate into their films was the importance of human rights, which will surely prove to be an interesting sight.

Paul Romano

The unique artistic flair that Paul Romano bares is one that is unbelievably rare to come by. With a portfolio involving album artwork for bands such as Mastodon, The Acacia Strain and a vast array of other musical acts, Paul really knows how to integrate his personal touch into whatever themes are desired to be presented. With art ranging from abstract hellish humans to calming sea imagery yet all clearly recognised to be the work of Paul, it is quite notable that something very special is going on. To the lucky residents of Philadelhia, Romano will be holding an exhibition from October 10 – November 10.

Conveniently Chill

With the vibe of summer beginning to emerge, if you have not begun to expose your senses to the indie folk sounds of Kings of Convenience, it is truely something to commene indulging in. The artwork of this album typifies the mood which is presented in this album, which is staring out towards a coastal horizon accompanied by a few drinks. The soothing element is something which is alike mainstream artist, Jack Johnson’s tunes, although the vocal harmonies that Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe provide is something much more unique. In all, the 3rd studio album ‘Declaration of Dependence’ should surely be an essential feature of this summer’s soundtrack.

All aboard!!…

A nostalgic trip down sydney lane can be taken at the Museum of Sydney up until the 18th of October. Currently being held at this location is a fascinating gallery of photos, film and memorabilia of the trams which used to operate around sydney, which is now replaced by the infamous cityrail. Tickets start at $5 and to see how you would have been able to get from A to B in your hometown from 1861-1961 is something which i Believe is priceless!

New Navy set sails!

New Navy, the brain child of fellow Wollongong University student Ben McInerney, are about to journey off into new sea with the acquisition of a  long awaited drummer. With the experience all band members hold, New Navy are sure to stun the live music scene along Sydney and the South Coast. The spazzy foals-esque math rock that New Navy delivers is something that Sydney is quite deprived of, but with upcoming efforts that are on the shore, the niche will be filled quite appropriately. Keep these tunes coming guys!

Lively lane ways of St. Peters

May Lane is located adjacent to St Peters Station and is blanketed with street art by both amateur and well established and recognised artists. This I believe is one of the true beauties to this well hidden gem, as your artwork can be located in the same area as those artists which you aspire to. Much of the work is carried out on domestic garage roller doors, which is allowed if permission is granted by the owner, but is totally illegal if not. There are however a number of removable panels which are monthly decorated with the weird, wacky and wonderful talent of invited artists.

The most recent panel to be painted was carried out by JOSH2000. I personally attended the opening where free alcohol was administered, which was definitely a bonus, although I was honestly utterly disappointed with the work. In a Japanese anime-esque format, a nude female was painted to be situated on an oversized fishing lure with the word ‘sluts’ hovering close by. Nothing about this was appealing, I cannot see from anyone’s perspective how this is considered worthwhile to be located in the high sought after space of May Lane. Maybe its just my personal taste, but at least there was free beer

Here is the work

Here are some shots I have personally taken of the lane.

Lights up, curtains drawn…

My name is Tom Marks and I study at Wollongong University. I have created this blog with the intention to plug but additionally critically analyse local upcoming and semi established artists and their related events in the Sydney area. By artists I am referring to musicians, illustrators, street artists, clothing designers and the like. Events which will be covered included concerts, markets, exhibitions and anything else relevant and exciting! I will conduct interviews, reviews, take photos of events and put forth some general ideas in relation to local music/arts/fashion.
